Pigs as land managers
Pigs are not a side project. Done well, they are some of the best ecological tools a homestead has — clearing brush, turning over compacted ground, and mineralizing the soil with manure where it’s needed most. Done poorly, they are a wrecking crew with hooves.
We try hard to do it well.
Our pigs
We favor heritage breeds — better foragers, better mothers, and better-tasting pork than the industry-standard hybrids. Specific breeds rotate based on availability and what’s working.
How we manage them
- Rotational paddocks through woodlot and rough pasture, never the same ground twice in a season.
- Forage-based. Acorns, roots, fallen fruit, and seasonal garden surplus do a lot of the feeding. Grain supplements the rest.
- Shade and water always. Pigs don’t sweat. We don’t compromise on this.
Pork
When we sell, it’s by the half or whole hog, processed at a USDA facility. We post availability seasonally — get on the list by emailing hello@texanpermaculture.com.
